On Wednesday, May 14, Pro Bono Counseling (PBC) hosted its annual Gratitude Gathering to honor the volunteers who make a profound impact in ensuring all Marylanders have access to mental health care. During the event, PBC also recognized generous supporters and community partners and presented a humanitarian awards.

“Pro Bono Counseling has connected thousands of Marylanders with the mental health care resources they need and deserve for more than 30 years thanks to the dedication of licensed mental health professionals who serve as volunteers, as well as the unwavering support of our constituents and donors,” said PBC Interim Executive Director Roxanne Melgar, LCSW-C.

Roxanne kicked off the evening with introductory remarks, offering an overview of PBC’s history and the vital role volunteers play in delivering accessible mental health care each year. Continuing an esteemed tradition, PBC presented the CHAI Dr. Radha Pathak Humanitarian Award. Dr. Sujay Pathak, Radha’s son, reflected on his mother’s enduring legacy before Roxanne presented the award to Dr. Harita Raja in recognition of her tireless efforts to promote mental health awareness and wellness, particularly in the South Asian community.

“I am grateful to receive the Dr. Radha Pathak Humanitarian Award from Pro Bono Counseling,” said Harita Raja, MD. “It is incredibly meaningful to be recognized by an organization whose mission aligns so closely with my own passion for mental health equity. I share this honor with all those who are working tirelessly to break down stigma and expand access to compassionate mental health care.”

The evening also featured messages from former clients Breezy Bishop and Christina Martin, who shared their powerful stories via video and letter, expressing deep appreciation for the volunteers who supported them in their times of need.

PBC’s Clinical Director Sherri Bloom and Outreach Associate Melanie Garcia celebrated volunteers by highlighting milestone achievements and their collective impact. Attendees were moved by the commitment of clinicians, many of whom have dedicated years to serving clients.

Since PBC’s founding in 1991, 3,347 licensed mental health professionals have provided 221,841 hours of counseling to 42,707 individuals and families across Maryland.

The event also served as a successful fundraiser, with more than $20,000 raised through sponsorships, donations, and silent auction proceeds. PBC extends its heartfelt thanks to all who contributed and continue to support the mission of expanding access to mental health care for all Marylanders.
