Session Description: Black Queer individuals continue to face systemic discrimination and significant barriers to accessing competent social services, often compounded by a well-founded mistrust of social institutions. As a result, many at these cultural intersections are excluded from essential care and support.
This workshop will explore the history of Black Queer communities, examining the colonial legacy of gender expression and identity and its lasting impact on the Black community. Participants will also discuss barriers to seeking and receiving services and gain insight into best practices for creating inclusive and effective healing spaces.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this presentation, the participant will be able to:
- Identify key aspects of the Black Queer community to improve cultural knowledge and competency.
- Describe the impact of colonization on the erasure and invalidation of Black gender diversity.
- Explain strategies to effectively engage with and support Black Queer individuals using a harm reduction and person-centered approach.
