Calls for "Less Talk. More Action."
In our role as a trusted leader in the fight to end breast cancer, Komen is launching a series of public outreach initiatives that seek to galvanize survivors and the general public to catalyze action at both the U.S. and global level in this important fight. Our goal is simple: We want to see measurable increases in breast health screening and mammography rates. This will be achieved by moving the public past the current breast cancer “awareness” mindset towards taking meaningful “action.” As the founder and inspiration of the global breast cancer movement, Ambassador Nancy Brinker will issue a call for America to “stop talking and start acting.” Everything we do this fall and into 2012 is geared towards driving people to take action. We are recommending three ways everyone can take action:

Applications are due November, 14, 2011 and funding for awarded programs will begin April 1, 2012. Komen Maryland is also pleased to report the collective accomplishments of our grant partners between April 2010 and March 2011. Nancy Mayonado is a Research Data Absractor at the Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute at Penninsula Regional Medical Center is Salisbury, MD. She has a passion for her work which goes above and beyond the expectations of her title. Nancy recently volunteered to join the planning committee for the Inaugural Eastern Shore Symposium, ‘Thinking Pink: A Celebration of Sisterhood & Breast Health for Life’, held at UMES in September. Nancy attended the many meetings necessary for the launch of this educational event, along with the other dedicated committee members, even when it was not convenient between her work and home responsibilities. She was always ready to offer suggestions and ideas to make the event a success, even when these ideas put more work on her plate. As often happens with a large event, there were fast approaching deadlines that had slipped by and necessitated fast action on the part of the committee. Specifically the graphic design of the printed materials: the registration brochure, the event poster and the event program. Nancy jumped in and offered to do the design work necessary on her computer the very day the issue was discovered. This was a big job! She spent many hours designing and redesigning the materials, then waiting for edits from our office, and going over everything with a fine tooth comb. She communicated with the printer and our staff and made sure all the materials were up to the high-quality standard we strive to achieve. She also had to step out of her comfort zone to participate in a last-minute interview on the PAC 14 television station to promote the event, and did a fabulous job despite her concerns! The night of the event, Nancy was the “tech” person for the speakers, making sure the PowerPoint slides and presentation were ready to go and all in order. She was the glue that held the presentations together and she accomplished it all with a quiet, ‘behind-the-scenes’ grace, much appreciated by our speakers. Everyone on the ‘Thinking Pink’ Symposium Committee worked very hard and shared their individual talents to create the event from the ground up, and they all deserve special recognition. Nancy Mayonado’s exceptional efforts, as a part of this team, and the enthusiastic, steady, diligent way she undertook all her tasks, unquestionably contributed to the great success of the event, which furthered the scope of Komen Maryland’s mission on the Eastern Shore. Thank you so much, Nancy!
