At the Pro Bono Counseling Project’s inception in 1991, its founders recognized the critical need to care for a segment of Maryland’s citizens who, without the benefit of health insurance, were denied necessary resources and access to quality mental health care. Through contributions in time and expertise from our licensed clinicians, grants from numerous organizations and foundations, generous support from all our PBCP friends, and the efforts of a talented and dedicated PBCP staff, thousands of men, women, children, and families in Maryland have received the care and healing that underscores the dignity of all, and the mission of PBCP.

Ms. M is a single parent of a six year old girl who was laid off from her job at a real estate development firm seven months ago. She was looking for similar employment and was discouraged about the lack of opportunity; and her daughter’s father’s financial help is unreliable.
While in therapy, she obtained a better job, and after six months of working with her clinical social worker, she reported,
“She has really helped me to change the way I do things and to stop feeling so bad about feeling bad.”
“I’m getting out of the house to exercise and taking my daughter ice skating every week now.”
