Quick Facts

We are proud of the progress we have made toward achieving our goals during the past year and we hope you will join us in celebrating our progress as we enter our 18th year in service:

  • More than 3,200 families and individuals were referred to the Pro Bono Counseling Project this year, doubling the number of referrals received just 5 years ago.
  • 1,339 licensed and insured mental health professionals representing clinical social work, psychology, psychiatry, advanced practice nursing and professional counseling participate, nearly 800 are actively receiving at least one referral annually.
  • During this past year alone, these clinicians donated 5,487 hours of therapy; a value of at least $505,000, totaling $4,500,000 during the past seventeen years.
  • 22 counties in addition to Baltimore City refer clients; keeping at least 280 active cases at all times.
  • The Pro Bono Counseling Project is effective and cost effective
Individual counseling for adults represented 64% (last year 61%); family counseling, including children and adolescents, was 19% of requests (last year 22%); geriatric requests continued to increase this year from 7% last year to 8% this year; and couples counseling diminished to 9% from 10% last year.  More people in the Jean Steirn Cancer Program and the Private Counseling for Public Service Programs are requesting group counseling.

Total requests for care increased this year and doubled the number of referrals received five years ago. They combine a variety of referral sources including health departments, mental health clinics that are reducing or ending services for uninsured clients, nonprofit organizations, substance abuse programs, homeless and family shelters and services.

The 775 currently active therapists of the Pro Bono Counseling Project volunteered 5,487 clinical hours with 769 clients from April 1, 2007 through March 31, 2008. During the past seventeen years, 1,339 clinicians have participated in the Pro Bono Counseling Project.
